New board setup

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Here are the new components, I reused the serial – ttl board, and the sd-card reader from the first attempt. This time I am going to keep everything inside the box as best I can (which means dI may need to add a fan)

I cut some of the openings in the bread board to make access to the PCB easier and to allow cooling later on.

Two steps back…

Well, short of using a JTAG programmer (which I don’t have…), the WAP54G is out of commission. Every attempt to access it results in the device rebooting. So I have ordered a replacement WRT54G off of EBAY, for twenty dollars I have a device with four times the storage space and memory. The interesting thing is that while 16MB of memory are used, 32MB have been installed in the device, so I can increase the ram used if needed.

I have also ordered an Arduino pro mini. total costs (if this router is suitable…) $65.00

Software fix part two…

With a few updates from Ubuntu, the samba server now works! I was trying my best to figure out what was going on with the server and why it would never start up until after login (basically having to do it manually). Now that it all works, the tablet can be placed in the kitchen next to the printer and left there, so no one else has to connect to it and then disconnect, move the printer, then move it back… This little box will be able to sit next to it, and quietly do all the work.

Added SD card reader.

I am in the process of adding an SD card reader to the device. This will let me place a web page on the card that the device will host. I will use the web page to control a micro-controller attached to the device as well.

Here are the steps:

Here is the web site that explained how to connect the SD card reader to a WAP54G device.

This is a test fit and not soldered, yet…
